Nicola Southey, originally from South Africa, has grown up with horses from an early age. Having owned several of her own, she went to work in the Thoroughbred industry, gaining experience in stud management. After three years, Nicola decided to broaden her horizons and set about travelling the Middle East and Europe, finishing in Britain gaining experience in the sport horse and polo fields. During this time Nicola became more interested in complimentary therapies, and decided that this was to be her chosen career. She researched various techniques but believed the EMRT to be the most beneficial to the equine as it treated the horse as a 'whole'. Nicola started the course in September 2001, and set about finding suitable employment, which she did as part of the rehabilitation team at the ILPH's Scottish farm, Belwade Farm, in December 2001. Nicola worked hard on learning her new skills alongside the rehabilitation skills she picked up as a matter of course in her daily work. 4 modules on the The Original Bowen Technique where included in the the equine training. During this time Nicola found that she enjoyed treating people as well as horses. Once she had qualified as a EMRT Practitioner in October 2002 she went on to complete her training and qualify as a Bowen Therapist in May 2003. Whilst working full time at Belwade, Nicola worked closely with the chartered equine physiotherapist. This has given her a better understanding of long term and chronic cases. In some cases Nicola has found that EMRT treatments can bring out the cause of an intermittent and varied lameness, which can be then be investigated by the vet, farrier and physiotherapist. EMRT has been complimentary to all the facets of rehabilitation and has helped nervous horses gain confidence in a shorter period of time to that of other methods. After being asked by many horse owners if she could help their dogs as well as their horses, Nicola completed a Cat & Canine Muscle Release Therapy CCmrt course in August 2004. (CCmrt) is the only small animal therapy which is recognised by the Bowen Therapy Academy of Australia. |
